January 28, 2012 Oil Spill Professional Development for Formal/Informal Educators
INFORMATION
During the 2010 Deepwater Horizon Oil crisis, educators from the Gulf region spoke with representatives of NOAA’s Office of Education (OE). Working with coastal educators, NOAA OE made available funding for two, oil spill professional development sessions to be conducted in the four, most affected U.S. Gulf of Mexico states, i.e., LA, MS, AL, and FL.
The first workshop was implemented on Saturday, April 30, 2011 from 9:00 a.m.-12:00 noon at 10 different locations around the Gulf. During the three-hour session, formal and informal educators heard from experts, via videoconferencing technology, in the 10 locations within four states on the topics of the impacts of the oil spill on marine mammals and sea turtles, Sargassum communities, seafood safety, and impacts on the marine environment.
On January 28, 2012, a second videoconference will again be implemented within MS, AL, LA, and the Panhandle of FL. The topics and speakers include: Toxicity risk, bioavailability, and biodegradation of oil – Dr. Richard Snyder, University of West Florida; Impacts on Birds – Dr. Mark Woody, MS Grand Bay-NERR; Oil Pollution 101 – Dr. Julia Lytle, University of Southern Mississippi-Gulf Coast Research Laboratory (retired); and Dispersants – Dr. Julie Anderson, Louisiana State University and Louisiana Sea Grant.
Educators will also participate in a hands-on activity following the presentations which they may choose to use in their classroom. A $100 stipend is available to the first 20 registrants per location. Continuing Education Units and Certificates of Participation will be provided to each formal/informal educator; check with your state representative for additional information. Participants will be required to respond to electronic pre- and posttests and an electronic evaluation for stipend eligibility. These tests must be completed online in order to receive the stipend. Educators will also be directed toward additional curricular resources and information related to the Deepwater Horizon Oil Spill.
