WE NEED YOU TO FRESHEN UP OUR BAYOU

CRCL needs 20 more volunteers to help freshen up Lake Maurepas Landbridge Friday, November 8.

It has taken ten years since the closure of MRGO for the Landbridge area to become habitual to freshwater trees. By planting these trees, we intend to continue this progress of freshening up the area.

Historically, the land bridge was covered by a sprawling swamp forest. But by the 1930s the entire land bridge was cleared of most Cypress trees. After the clearing, invasive nutria prevented new tree growth. To make matters worse, the opening of MRGO in 1965 spiked the salinity of the area, killing large areas of freshwater trees and plants.

Today, CRCL is reintroducing hundreds of Cypress, Red Swamp Maple, and Water Tupelo trees in the area. The salinity level is no longer too salty since the closure of the MRGO channel in 2009, allowing such freshwater plants to grow, prosper, and protect their surrounding communities around the Lake.
