COASTAL WETLANDS PLANNING, PROTECTION AND RESTORATION ACT

PROJECT STATUS REPORT as of 18-Apr-2024

Bayou Sale Shoreline Protection DEAUTHORIZED

PROJECT LOCATION:

The project is located in Region 3, Teche/Vermilion Basin, St. Mary Parish, along the eastern shoreline of East Cote Blanche Bay from British American Canal to the mouth of Bayou Sale.

PROJECT DESCRIPTION:

Eroding shoreline at an estimated rate of 13.5 ft/year has been caused by the open water fetch and resulting wave energy from East Cote Blanche Bay. The resulting shoreline has resulted in a substantial loss of live oak forest, emergent wetlands and critical habitat used by a multitude of fish and wildlife species including the endangered black bear. The goal of this project is to reduce and/or reverse shoreline erosion and create marsh between the breakwater and existing shoreline. This project will construct a foreshore rock dike parallel to and approximately 150 feet out from the existing eastern shoreline of East Cote Blanche Bay. The rock dike will be tied into the banks of all substantial channels.

PROJECT STATUS: (Project Status Last Updated: 11-Jul-2012 )

Project scope change did not get approved by Technical Committee. Project team reviewing option suggested by Parish to allow a test section of an alternative shoreline protection product, funded by Parish. Project Team currently assessing viability.

FUND STATUS:

The current project estimate is $1,855,824 , which includes $1,855,824 for construction first costs, and $0 and $0 for 20 years of monitoring and operations and maintenance, respectively.
