Cote Blanche Hydrologic Restoration

PROJECT LOCATION:

The Cote Blanche Wetland is a 30,000-acre fresh marsh located in St. Mary Parish.

PROJECT DESCRIPTION:

The primary objectives of the project are to reduce future shoreline loss from wave erosion, reduce excessive tidal fluctuations and rapid tidal exchange to prevent scouring of interior marsh, develop a hydrologic regime conducive to sediment and nutrient deposition, and to re-establish vegetation in eroded areas. These objectives are to be accomplished through the use of both structural and non-structural features.

PROJECT STATUS: (Project Status Last Updated: 22-Mar-2002 )

Construction start date slipped from November 1997 to March 1998 because of concern about the source of shell to construct the project. Site inspection for bidder was held January 12, 1998. Concern for a source of shell may require budget modifications. Contract awarded February 1998; notice to proceed March 1998. Construction was completed December 1998. O&M plan executed. Maintenance contract complete.

FUND STATUS:

The current project estimate is $10,700,831 , which includes $4,593,826 for construction first costs, and $741,334 and $5,365,671 for 20 years of monitoring and operations and maintenance, respectively.
