PROJECT STATUS REPORT as of 11-Oct-2024
Lower Bayou LaCache Hydrologic Restoration DEAUTHORIZED
PROJECT LOCATION:
PROJECT DESCRIPTION:
The project will reduce marsh loss rate and improve fish and wildlife habitat quality by 1) restoring natural north-south water exchange with estuarine water bodies and 2) by reducing flow through the numerous dredged canals in the area. The project involves construction of shell-reinforced plugs at nine potential locations (oil and/or gas access canals) along Bayou Petit Caillou and six potential locations along Bayou Terrebonne. Plugs range from about 80 to 175 linear feet. Some active access canals may have to be ringed, rather than plugged, and provided with water control structures. Some plugs may also require a boat bay. In addition, the south bank levee of Bush Canal will be reconstructed and reinforced.
PROJECT STATUS: (Project Status Last Updated: 01-Jan-1990 )
In a public hearing on September 22, 1993, with landowners in the project area, users strenuously objected to the proposed closure of the two east-west connections between Bayou Petit Caillou and Bayou Terrebonne. NMFS received a letter from LA DNR, dated February 6, 1995, recommending deauthorization of the project. NMFS forwarded the letter to COE for Task Force approval. Deauthorized.
FUND STATUS:
The current project estimate is $99,625 , which includes $91,730 for construction first costs, and $6,332 and $1,563 for 20 years of monitoring and operations and maintenance, respectively.
