COASTAL WETLANDS PLANNING, PROTECTION AND RESTORATION ACT

PROJECT STATUS REPORT as of 29-Mar-2024

Opportunistic Use of the Bonnet Carre Spillway DEAUTHORIZED

PROJECT LOCATION:

This project is located on the southwestern shore of Lake Pontchartrain.

PROJECT DESCRIPTION:

Most of the wetlands directly connected to the lake would be benefited by the opportunistic use of the Bonnet Carre Spillway. The majority of the benefits, approximately 177 acres, would be in the LaBranche Wetlands. The LaBranche area lost nearly 3,100 acres of interior marsh between 1956 and 1974 (the period when the MRGO and I-10 were built and Hurricane Betsy inundated the area). Project features include raising enough pins to allow no more than 4,000 cfs to enter the spillway when the Mississippi River is high enough that leakage occurs through the Bonnet Carre structure. The pins should be returned to position prior to April 1 to reduce the possibility of algal blooms in Lake Pontchartrain. Monitoring of nutrient loading in the lake would be conducted to develop the appropriate operational requirements of the structure, in coordination with the Lake Ponchartrain Basin Foundation. Operation of the spillway will be controlled by the Lake Ponchartrain nutrient budget.

PROJECT STATUS: (Project Status Last Updated: 04-Sep-2007 )

At the June 27, 2007 CWPPRA Task Force meeting, the Task Force voted to begin the deauthorization process for this project. In accordance with the CWPPRA Project Standard Operating Procedures Manual, notices were sent out in July 2007 to all interested parties requesting their comments and advising them that, at the next CWPPRA Task Force meeting (currently scheduled for October 25, 2007), a final decision on deauthorization will be made.

FUND STATUS:

The current project estimate is $83,932 , which includes $52,991 for construction first costs, and $30,941 and $0 for 20 years of monitoring and operations and maintenance, respectively.
