PROJECT STATUS REPORT as of 25-Apr-2024

Grand Terre Vegetative Plantings COMPLETE

PROJECT LOCATION:

Grand Terre is a barrier island located adjacent to, and east of Grand Isle, LA.

PROJECT DESCRIPTION:

The island presently is approximately 550 acres in size and contains shallow water, intertidal marsh, swale, scrub-shrub upland, and dune habitats. In 1996, a 115 acre section on the east side of th island was filled with material dredged from BBWW bar channel. This spoil disposal smothered intertidal and higher elevation wetlands and dune vegetation. The objectives of the project are to stabilize the dredged material platform via vegetative planting; and to remove all cattle from the island and purchase grazing rights for the duration of the project (20 years). This project will develop and implement a planting protocol to re-vegetate the +100 acre dredged material site on Grand Terre Island. The project should also involve some strategic degrading of retention dikes, particularly along the bay-side of the island, to enhance the ingress and egress of marine fisheries.

PROJECT STATUS: (Project Status Last Updated: 22-May-2002 )

Planting of 3,100 units each of bitter panicum, gulf cordgrass, and marshhay cordgrass on beach nourishment/dune area, and installation of approximately 35,000 smooth cordgrass and 800 black mangrove was completed in June 2001. Monitoring is underway. Project area is being evaluated for additional plantings in 2003/2004.

FUND STATUS:

The current project estimate is $346,578 , which includes $283,253 for construction first costs, and $60,799 and $2,526 for 20 years of monitoring and operations and maintenance, respectively.
