Breaux Act Newsflash - Volunteers needed for Louisiana Envirothon

Volunteers needed for Louisiana Envirothon

What: Louisiana Envirothon

When: Saturday, April 25, 2009 -- 7 a.m. to 3p.m.

Where: ULL's Cade Farm facility on 1234 W. J. Bernard Road in St.
Martinville, Louisiana.

Volunteers are needed to be an escort "buddy" assigned to a team of five
students as they go through testing stations to compete in five natural
resource areas: soils, aquatic resources, forestry, wildlife, and the
current environmental issue: biodiversity in a changing world.

Volunteers should meet at the welcome center at 7:00 a.m. for breakfast and
check in with Karen Fisher-Brasher or the volunteer coordinator, who will
assign volunteer with a student team to be their escort "buddy" through the
testing stations. The program begins at 8 a.m. and the volunteers will be
team buddies staying with them all day following from station to station.
Volunteer Buddies help teams with their needs other than testing, make sure
the team gets to the correct rotation and on time to each station rotation
and ensures that team members do not have access to contraband. Volunteers
will eat lunch with the team and escort the team for testing after lunch.
Once the testing is complete, results will be tallied and awards are given
made before the students leave that day around 3:00 p.m. Breakfast, lunch
and water will be provided.

Louisiana Envirothon is a multidisciplinary, environmental problem-solving
competition for students in grades 6 through 12. Teams of five young people
will compete in five natural resource areas and do an oral presentation on a
solution to an environmental problem related to the current issue.
Throughout the competition students learn hands-on and in a real-life
context the complexities of solving environmental problems while working as
a team and having fun.

The team of ninth through twelfth grade students with the highest overall
score will travel to the Canon Envirothon competition in August to represent
Louisiana. The team's travel expenses are paid by Louisiana Envirothon.
Information on the Canon Envirothon Competition can be found at
