LUMCON's Estuary Awareness and Discovery (LEAD) Camp for High School
Students

Attention high school students: Have you ever wanted to spend a week
exploring the coastal and marine environments of Louisiana? Well, now is
your chance!

LUMCON is taking applications for LUMCON's Estuary Awareness and Discovery
(LEAD) Camp through May 5, 2009. The dates for this environmental experience
are June 21 through June 27. The campers spend one week at the W. J.
DeFelice Marine Center learning about the coastal and marine environments of
South Louisiana. Campers use scientific equipment and laboratory and field
techniques, such as plant and animal surveys, sediment coring and standard
water chemistry, to explore the marsh and bay environments.

LUMCON offers this camp program to high school students entering grades 9-12
who are interested in marine or environmental science as well as Louisiana's
coast and how people are connected to its rich environment. The experience
provides students with a new awareness and understanding of the ecosystem,
the threats to the Louisiana coast and the steps they can take toward being
responsible stewards of the Louisiana's coastal environment.

Camp highlights include:

Research cruise aboard the R/V Acadiana

Research trip to one of the barrier islands

Salt marsh canoeing

Fish and invertebrate dissections

Water sampling

Wetland transect and coring

Laboratory sessions
