Breaux Act Newsflash - Volunteers Needed for a Terrace Planting Project in Cameron Parish

Cameron Parish is one of the foremost areas of marsh deterioration in
Louisiana. To help combat this problem, research is being conducted on the
effectiveness of terraces (long mounds of soil and sediment used to build up
land) on marsh regeneration. The America's Wetland Conservation Crops
(AWCC) will be planting a variety of marsh grass along terraces to help
fight coastal erosion and to study which plants provide the most stable root
mass to hold sediment.
What: A terrace planting restoration project.
When: June 25th and 26th.
(Volunteers are welcome to come for both days or for only one day, depending
on your availability).
Time: To be announced - will start in the morning.
Where: Miami Corporation Terraces in Cameron Parish.
We will meet at the LSU AgCenter in Lake Charles Wednesday morning (meeting
time will be announced as soon as possible). The address is 7101 Gulf Hwy,
located south of Burton Coliseum.
Volunteers will be divided into teams for various jobs and then we will
caravan to the site. Transportation to the site includes a boat ride to get
out to the terraces.
Drinks will be available. Depending on the number of volunteers, lunch may
be provided; but plan on bringing a sack lunch or money for meals,
transportation, and lodging if needed.
Items to bring: clothes that can get dirty, old tennis shoes or boots,
sunscreen, bug spray, and hat. Keep in mind that it can get very hot and
very sunny at this location, and will require hard work; so come prepared!
