The Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries' (LDWF) Natural
Heritage Program has posted new facts sheets for Louisiana's Coastal Zone
rare species and associated natural communities on the LDWF Web site.
These fact sheets can be found at
www.wlf.louisiana.gov/experience/naturalheritage/coastalzone
The fact sheets were developed in partnership with the
Barataria-Terrebonne National Estuary Program (BTNEP) and partially funded
by the BTNEP Mini-Grants Program. They are designed to provide basic
information on animals, plants or natural communities that will aid in
identifying sensitive species and their habitats, will serve as a useful
tool for educators, and will help guide development of management plans
and review of coastal zone projects.
Each two-sided fact sheet contains general information on rare species and
natural communities including: state & global rarity ranks, recognition
characteristics, photos, range, habitat, LA river basins, threats, and
beneficial management practices.
Please take a look at the sheets on our website at:
http://www.wlf.louisiana.gov/experience/naturalheritage/coastalzone/
And spread the word to your colleagues...

PROJECT DIRECTOR
COASTAL RESTORATION AND ENHANCEMENT THROUGH SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY (CREST)
We seek qualified applicants for the Project Director of CREST. The CREST
program exists to produce and promote the use of the latest scientific
developments and best technologies to ensure sustainable and productive
coastal habitats and communities. CREST comprises 12 participating
academic institutions in Louisiana and Mississippi in partnership with
federal and state agencies and other institutions interested in coastal
restoration. The program was established in 2002 with funding from NOAA
Office of Response and Restoration, and has been authorized through 2011.
Further authorization is possible after that date.
The Project Director will be responsible for the day-to-day operations of
the partnership and will be selected by the Executive Board of CREST to
coordinate all activities of the collaborative program, including, but not
limited to: serving as liaison among all groups involved in CREST; working
with the Program's Technical Advisory Board (TAB) and fiscal agency
(LUMCON) to carry out directives from the Executive Board (EB); developing
RFPs in cooperation with the TAB and issuing them at the directive of the
EB; developing and coordinating external peer review and final panel
review in collaboration with the TAB and EB; tracking funded projects and
their contractual obligations; pursuing additional collaborative
relationships and funding opportunities; organizing presentations of CREST
and other research and representing the Program at the directive of the
EB; overseeing research programs; and representing CREST to local, state
and federal agencies. The Project Director will not be eligible for
competitive research funding from this program.
The successful candidate is expected to have a Ph.D. and a research record
in coastal studies; or a Master's degree in a discipline related to the
activities of CREST along with administrative experience. Experience with
science and technology related to coastal restoration is highly desirable.
The position may be full-time, or part-time in the case of an appointment
of a faculty or staff member from one of the participating universities.
Salary will be commensurate with experience.
The CREST office, presently at Louisiana State University, may be sited at
any of the partnering institutions (Loyola University at New Orleans,
McNeese State University, Nicholls State University, Louisiana State
University, Louisiana State University Agricultural Center, Louisiana
Universities Marine Consortium, Southeastern Louisiana University,
Southern University at New Orleans, Tulane University, the University of
Louisiana at Lafayette, the University of New Orleans, and the University
of Southern Mississippi). The Director will be an employee of one of the
member institutions, with salary and budget reimbursed to that institution
by CREST, and may apply for adjunct professor status, as appropriate.
Applicants should send electronic copies of a statement of interest,
research and administrative experience, curriculum vita, and names,
contact information and email of three references by 15 March 2008 to Dr.
Nancy Rabalais, Executive Director of LUMCON and Chair of CREST Executive
Board, 8124 Highway 56, Chauvin, LA 70344, nrabalais@lumcon.edu.
