LPBF
Education: Water Watch 2007-08
Lake Pontchartrain Basin Foundation offers a free year long water
monitoring program to middle schools and high schools in the Pontchartrain
Basin in order to increase awareness of water quality in the Lake
Pontchartrain Basin. LPBF facilitates as classroom teachers have students
test water samples bi-weekly from selected sites in canals or waterways on
the south shore or from selected sites along rivers or creeks on the north
shore. Results are reported to LPBF and in the spring correlations are
made on the data collected. A powerpoint presentation is prepared showing
the results. Call 504-836-2238 and sign up your school to participate.

NOVEMBER
Activity: Harvesting Louisiana Native Plant Seeds (Northshore of Lake
Pontchartrain)
Date: November 3, 9, and 10, 9am to 3pm
Location: Several remnant longleaf pine savanna sites on the Northshore
of Lake Pontchartain near Abita Springs and Lake Ramsey
Description: Individual and group volunteers needed to collect native
Louisiana plant seeds at sites near Abita Springs and/or Lake Ramsey.
Seeds will be used for future coastal restoration projects to restore
coastal habitat and regenerate food sources for wildlife. Volunteers will
work in tall grass so we advise you to wear long pants and closed toe
shoes. Orientation will include education on native plant identification.
Plant knowledge a plus but not necessary.
Activity: Invasive Species Removal at Fountainbleu State Park
Date: November 5, 6, 7, and 8, 9am to 3pm
Location: Fontainebleau State Park near Mandeville (Northshore)
Description: Volunteers needed to help remove invasive Chinese Tallow
tree in Fontainebleau State Park. Activities include pulling up saplings,
cutting small trees and applying herbicide with a paint brush to the
stump, drilling a hole in larger trees and applying herbicide directly
into hole. Orientation will be given to identify plants and removal is
simple though labor intensive. Invasive species are gaining ground since
Hurricane Katrina knocked down a significant amount of trees in this park
along the northshore of Lake Pontchartain. As native plants grow back,
control of invasive species is important for recovery.
Activity: Invasive Species Removal at Bayou Segnette State Park
Date: November 12, 13, and 14; 9am to 4pm
Location: Bayou Segnette State Park (near Westwego on the Westbank, near
New Orleans)
Description: Volunteers needed to help remove invasive Chinese Tallow
tree in Bayou Segnette State Park. Activities include pulling up
saplings, cutting small trees and applying herbicide with spray bottle to
the stump. Orientation will be given to identify plants and removal is
simple though labor intensive. Invasive species are gaining ground since
Hurricane Katrina knocked down a significant amount of trees in this park

though labor intensive. Invasive species are gaining ground since
Hurricane Katrina knocked down a significant amount of trees in this park
on the Westbank near Westwego. As native plants grow back, control of
invasive species is important for recovery.
Activity: Invasive Species Removal at Sam Houston Jones State Park near
Lake Charles
Date: November 16 and 17; 9am to 4pm
Location: Sam Houston Jones State Park (north of Lake Charles)
Description: Volunteers needed to help remove invasive Chinese Tallow
tree in Sam Houston Jones State Park. Activities include pulling up
saplings and/or cutting small trees and applying herbicide with spray
bottle to the stump. Orientation will be given to identify plants and
removal is simple though labor intensive. Invasive species are gaining
ground since Hurricane Rita knocked down a significant amount of trees in
this beautiful state park near Lake Charles. As native plants grow back,
control of invasive species is important for recovery.
Activity: Harvesting Louisiana Native Plant Seeds (coastal prairie sites)
Date: November 19 and 20, 8:30am to 3pm
Location: Several remnant coastal prairie sites on Hwy 165 near Kinder
and Hwy 14 near Kaplan (between Lafayette and Lake Charles, off I-10)
