Notes:
Flood damage from the hurricanes in the 1947 was well documented and supported a more extensive Federal involvement in South Florida. In response Congress passed the Flood Control Act of 1948 with authorizing the construction of a huge multistage project designed and constructed by the Army Corps of Engineers to prevent recurrent flood in central and south Florida. The Central and Southern Florida Flood Control District was created by the Florida Legislature in 1949 to operate and maintain the project as it was constructed.
