Regional Ecosystem Strategies: Region 2

Restore Swamps
Construct several small, sediment-rich diversions with outfall management
Restore natural drainage patterns
Prevent diversion-related flooding by building local levees at wetland/ upland interface and local pumping; remove diverted waters from upper basin by raising Hwy 90 and installing flap-gated culverts or other appropriate measures
Restore/Sustain Marshes
Use existing or future locks (Harvey, Algiers, Empire) to divert as much water as possible (Harvey is not currently an appropriate management tool to achieve this)
Manage outfall of existing diversions
Enrich existing diversions with sediment
Continue building and maintaining delta splays
Construct most effective small diversions (Upper Oak, Amoretta, East & West of Empire)
Prevent the loss of sediment off of the continental shelf in the near-term by constructing a sediment trap south of Venice and pump out to build marsh
Construct delta-building diversion in Myrtle Grove/Naomi area (about 15,000 cfs)
Construct delta-building diversion into Bastion Bay from Buras (about 15,000 cfs)
Construct delta-building diversion into Benny's Bay in Birdsfoot (about 50,000cfs)
Construct delta-building diversion into American Bay (from 20,000 up to 100,000 cfs)
Construct controlled crevasses to allow diversion into Quarantine Bay and contain sediment with low levees (about 50,000 cfs)
Prevent the loss of sediment off of the continental shelf in the long-term by relocating the navigation channel, not through Bastion Bay, to reallocate water and sediment for land building near-shore.
Create strip of marsh adjacent to Hwy 1 using dedicated dredging
Use dedicated delivery of sediment for marsh building in Caminada Bay
Construct large conveyance channel from the Mississippi River parallel to Bayou Lafourche to divert up to 100,000 cfs to create a delta lobe in Caminada Bay area, provided that any navigation features of the strategy do not impede or interfere with the land building capacity of the diversion.
Gap spoil banks and plug canals in lower bay marshes to maximize deposition of sediment in brackish and saline marshes
Protect Bay/Lake Shorelines
Build wave absorbers or low breakwaters at heads of bays to protect fringing marshes
Construct reef zones across bays
Restore/Maintain Barrier Islands
Restore barrier headlands, islands and shorelines using most cost effective alternative from Barrier Island Feasibility Study
Extend barrier islands/shoreline from Sandy Point to Southwest Pass.
Maintain Critical Land Forms
Build entire CWPPRA land bridge shore protection project
Preserve bay/lake shoreline integrity along land bridge
Use dedicated dredging to create marsh in appropriate areas on land bridge
Build Bayou Lafourche Siphon if cost effective (EPA Priority List #5 project).
